Happy New Year to all of you and your families.
The King Cake meeting is the first event to celebrate the 40th birthday of the twinning charter’s signature. Between our two cities, Bude-Stratton and Ergué-Gabéric , 40 years of exchanges without any break.
Welcome to the French associations here with us tonight to celebrate this New Year 2019.
What does make our twinning still exist and so active since 40 years ?
More and more, people travel and visit the world. The world seems smaller, downsized with quicker and quicker moving. So that now, the twinning with a Cornish town in UK could be seen as old-fashioned, from another time, but it doesn’t.
It depends first on the kind of its activities. It is a continuously renew experiment, based on exchanges between two cultures and their inhabitants.
Those who stayed in Bude or received English twinners can tell you: It is completely different from package tour, in spite of short stays. It is total immersion in the everyday life of an unalike culture. We are warm welcome and we do our best to do the same when they stay with us. We are building bonds of friendship and that is the most important thing.
The modern concept of town twinning, conceived after the Second World War, was intented to foster friendship and understanding between different cultures and between former foes as an act of peace and reconciliation: exchanges in everyday life to cultivate friendship relationship, a nice idea always working !
The Ergue-Bude twinning is a part of this story since 1979, thanks to the founding fathers who build on the opportunity of school exchanges with British Cornwall and gave a formal framework with Pierre Faucher , the mayor in 1979.
Since, the twinning has succeeded in developing all kinds of exchanges (culture, sports…).Many associations of Ergue Gaberic took part of it: football matches between English and French teams, hiking on the Cornish path with the ALEG association, singing with Les Gabiers, stays with “l’espace jeunes” , with the “college de la Tour d’Auvergne”, relay race with Ergue Vras Court, and so on… (You can see some of these moments on mini video on the blog .)
We do still exist thanks to the successive council teams who respected the initial commitment. “We undertake to work together for the success of the enterprise and to ensure that it will be an example of co-operation and harmony between our two peoples”, as it is written in the twinning‘s statute, the charter signed in 1979.
The twinning has a particular place in the town, because it belongs to everybody. Beyond the thirty families members, it concerns the whole community.
It is our spirit for the 40th birthday. Our wishes:
- Do not celebrate this birthday on our own, but with the participation of local associations to trigger new ideas and exchanges,
- Give “twinning colour” to the town,
- Collect testimonies, videos, photos, which will be presented in an evening party in March.
Many appointments in 2019 for the 40th twinning birthday are planned. We began to build a programme we can all improve.
We will welcome our British friends in May 3, 4, 5 and 6th .We planned a sharing time, we called “Partageons nos talents” (sharing our talents). We are counting on everybody to teach to our twinning friends , for example, calligraphy, or to try to play bombarde, or dance or whatever you can show which are our know-how …
Happy New year 2019 and Happy Birthday to the twinning !
